The Courage of Our Convictions

Passage: Daniel 1, 3, 6

We’ll finish up our study of biblical convictions by considering a few examples of biblical characters who displayed the courage of their convictions—Daniel and his three friends—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

Daniel and his 3 friends were under tremendous pressure to conform to the culture of Babylon. They had been separated from their Jewish families, taken to a foreign land by force, taught a new language, given Babylonian names, and even fed Babylonian food. They were under pressure to drop their Jewish faith and adopt a pagan culture.

In spite of those pressures, Daniel and his friends were able to stand up and not compromise their convictions, and that’s what we should do as well.

We face some similar pressures and temptations, and we must stand strongly for our beliefs and not compromise, capitulate, or cave in. Our culture is against us. These days, in order to maintain a Christian testimony, we have to be counter-cultural. 1 John 2:15-17 “Love not the world…”

Having strong biblical convictions means that we do our best not to compromise those beliefs. We strive to live consistently with what we believe.

Let’s see what Daniel and his three friends tell us about having the courage of our convictions.
