Elijah–Background and Message
This summer we’ll be considering the ministries of two of the greatest of the OT prophets—Elijah and Elisha. Their stories are recorded in 1-2 Kings.
Most of the stories about these two prophets are familiar to us. We’ve heard about them since we were kids. Many SS lessons deal with the lives of Elijah and Elisha. These are some of the most exciting and interesting stories in the whole Bible. The Bible assures us that these OT stories are beneficial for us; they were written and recorded for our admonition, and we should learn from them.
But the world of these two men is much different from ours. It may seem like we have little in common with the ancient Hebrews who lived on the other side of the globe almost 3000 years ago. But the Word of God is timeless. The OT is part of the Bible—in fact, it comprises ¾ of the entire Bible. These stories are for us, not only for Israel. If we don’t know the OT, we’ll not understand the NT. The NT refers to both of these prophets many times, so it’s beneficial to see what these two famous prophets can teach us today.
