Convictions Regarding the Sanctity of Human Life
We are continuing this morning with our Summer Sermon Series on biblical convictions. Christians ought to have convictions, that is, strongly-held beliefs, and one of the most strongly-held of our beliefs should be that humans have value. All humans have value, and the weakest and most vulnerable among us are worthy of special support and protection.
Today we’ll be considering biblical convictions regarding the sanctity of human life.
Christians have been fighting for the sanctity of human life since the beginning of the church. In recent times, Christians fought against the infamous Roe v. Wade decision. We were very happy that that decision was recently overturned. We are very happy that many states maintain strong restrictions on abortion. In several states, abortion is virtually impossible. Sadly, WI is not one of those states. Just the other day (July 2), the WI supreme court overturned a previous law banning abortions.
Abortion is still a major issue in the US. Today, abortion is possible through pills. Pregnant women don’t have to go to an abortion mill like Planned Parenthood to obtain an abortion. They can order a set of pills that will kill their baby in the privacy of their own homes. In fact, I’ve heard that the majority of abortions now are done privately through the use of abortion pills. About 1M abortions happen every year in the US.
Whether someone destroys the baby at home or at an abortion mill, whether the baby is 10 weeks old or 36 weeks old, abortion is murder; it’s a violation of the sanctity of human life.
At the other end of life, when people reach old age, some people face another threat called euthanasia, mercy killing, or doctor-assisted suicide. When people reach a certain age, when facing death, or for any other reason, people today want the option of legal suicide.
We live in a culture of death. Many in our culture want the option of killing people before they are born, killing them when they get old, or killing them when they are depressed.
Christians should have a strong moral conviction that killing innocent people at any age is immoral and should be illegal. We have such convictions because we believe in the sanctity of human life.
What kind of biblical convictions should we have regarding the sanctity of human life?
