The Rich Fool
The Bible tells us repeatedly to value eternal things instead of earthly things. Our treasures ought to be in heaven. Our affections ought to be directed toward heavenly things, not earthly things. Our riches ought to be employed for God’s purposes, not for luxurious living.
In today’s passage, Jesus warns his disciples against covetousness and illustrates the error of that sin with a story about a rich man who had stored up incredible wealth, but was never able to enjoy it. He left it all behind when he died, and unfortunately, he had not made any plans for his eternal destiny.
The warning here is not to be like that man. Don’t accumulate earthly goods at the cost of your soul. Keep clear of covetousness.
