We’re finishing up the first chapter of Luke. Luke began his record of Jesus’ life and times with the miraculous birth of John the Baptist, the forerunner of the Messiah.

John has now been born, the family and friends have come to celebrate, and Z affirmed that the child’s name will be John.

Thus far we’ve seen that God fulfilled his promises to Z and E that they’d have a child, and Z and E proved to be obedient in naming the child John.

As soon as Z affirmed that John was the child’s name, Zechariah’s mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God. (vs. 64)

So this is what Z said, as soon as he was able to say anything, regarding the birth of his son, John. What’s interesting is that Z says more about God than he does about John. He’s no doubt thrilled and overjoyed about the birth of his son, but his main concern is giving glory to God for how the child fits into God’s plan of salvation. Z foresees that John will play an important role in preparing the way for the Messiah.
