The Genealogy and Temptation of Jesus, part 2

Passage: Luke 4:1-13

We are all sadly familiar with temptation. Since the very beginning of creation, humans have been subject to temptation and we often give in to our inner appetites and desires.

There has only ever been one human who never gave in to temptation, and that was Jesus. The Bible says that Jesus was tempted in all points like as we are, and yet did not sin (Heb 4:15). Jesus endured the full strength of temptation without ever budging an inch.

Last Sunday we began considering Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness. We talked about several aspects of Jesus’ temptation. I mentioned that Jesus was temptable because of his human nature but was not capable of sin because of his divine nature.

We also saw that this temptation occurred under the leading of the Holy Spirit. (vs. 1). This contest was clearly within the will of God. It was important for Jesus to begin his ministry by successfully withstanding Satan’s attacks.

Now we are ready to move on to consider several other things about Jesus’ temptation.
